Mohs surgery may be recommended when precision and preservation of healthy tissue are especially important, including cancers on the face, ears, nose, eyelids, lips, scalp, hands, and feet. It is also commonly used for recurrent, aggressive, large, or poorly defined skin cancers.

Patients should generally plan to spend approximately 3–6 hours at Miami Mohs Specialists. The exact time depends on how many stages are needed to completely remove the cancer. Much of the time is spent while tissue samples are processed and examined in the on-site laboratory.

Mohs surgery is commonly used to treat basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), as well as certain melanomas when specialized Mohs protocols are appropriate. Dr. Freedman evaluates each diagnosis to determine whether Mohs is the right treatment.

Any skin surgery can result in a scar, but Mohs surgery is designed to remove only tissue containing cancer whenever possible, helping minimize the size of the surgical wound. Depending on the wound, closure may involve stitches, a skin flap, a graft, or natural healing through secondary intention.
